A brake caliper bolt snapped on a 2016 Civic and I had to ride the bus for 3 days
Had a 2016 Civic in the bay at my shop in Sacramento two weeks back for a front brake job. The lower caliper bolt was seized so bad that when I leaned on my breaker bar, the head just snapped clean off. I tried an extractor, then heat, then drilling it out with a left hand bit, but the threads were toast. Ended up ordering a used knuckle for $85 and told the customer it would be another day. Any of you got a better move when a caliper bolt snaps flush on those aluminum knuckles?
Man that sucks, those aluminum knuckles are the worst for this. What has saved me a few times is welding a nut right onto the broken stub, the heat from welding breaks the corrosion loose and then you just spin it out with a wrench while it's still hot. If you don't have a welder handy, a good stud extractor that bites into the shank after you grind it flat can work too, but you gotta get it dead center or you're wasting your time. Honestly for $85 a used knuckle is a pretty solid call though, sometimes you just eat the labor and move on instead of fighting it for hours. I've done both and there's no shame in swapping the knuckle when the clock is ticking.
