My 1994 Chevy K1500 went from 12 MPG to 17 MPG after one stupid simple fix
Last month I was getting 12 MPG on my 1994 Chevy K1500 and it was running rough at idle. I checked the usual stuff, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and all looked fine. A older mechanic at the parts store in Reno told me to check the coolant temp sensor for the computer, not the gauge. It was reading -40 degrees, so the ECM thought the engine was cold and dumped fuel. I swapped a $22 sensor and within two tanks my MPG jumped to 17 and the idle smoothed out. Has anyone else had a sensor lie to the computer and mess up your fuel mileage that bad?
Buddy of mine had a similar deal with his 97 Silverado. Thing was dumping fuel like crazy and fouling plugs every couple weeks. He threw every part at it, cap, rotor, wires, even a new throttle body. Turned out to be the same coolant temp sensor reading way off, telling the computer it was cold all the time. Swapped it and his mileage went from like 11 back up to 16. Those sensors are sneaky like that, they don't always throw a code either.
