That dumb oil filter housing cracked on a 2018 RAV4 last Friday

Took me 2 hours to get the old one out because Toyota used some kind of plastic that turned brittle, had to fish out shards with a pick, anyone find a metal replacement that actually fits right?

Wait, they used plastic for the oil filter housing on a 2018 RAV4? That's insane, I thought Toyota would have learned their lesson after all those issues with the plastic coolant valley pipes in the older V6 engines. I've heard good things about the Dorman metal replacement housing, but you gotta double-check the torque specs 'cause some aftermarket ones are slightly off and can leak.

Oh man, tell me about it. I actually had that same plastic housing crack on my 2018 RAV4 last year, @richard_dixon, and it dumped oil all over my driveway at like 7 AM on a Saturday. I felt like such a fool for not swapping it out sooner, but hey, that's my luck. I ended up going with the Dorman metal one too, and you're absolutely right about those torque specs. I actually stripped the first one I put on because I just went "tight enough" like a knucklehead. Had to buy a second one and borrow a torque wrench from my neighbor. Definitely a lesson learned the hard way, but that metal housing is a total game changer once you get it on right.
