The service writer who made me stop blaming the customer's driving habits

Old timer at the shop in Denver heard me grumbling about a rough idle and said 'you check the ground strap before you check their foot', and now I always start with grounds before I even look at codes, any other techs had a simple comment like that flip their whole diagnostic process?

So is the ground strap thing really the magic fix, or did the old timer just happen to get lucky on one car? I've seen plenty of rough idles traced back to a bad MAF sensor or a vacuum leak, and grounds were fine the whole time.
