Tried that 'starter fluid trick' on a diesel and almost lost my eyebrows

I sprayed a tiny bit of ether into a 7.3 Powerstroke that wouldn't start after a fuel filter change. Thing backfired and blew the intake tube clean off, scared the crap out of my helper. Lesson learned, just bleed the air out properly next time. Anyone else have a quick fix go sideways on a diesel?
