Watching a guy reflow a cracked solder joint on a 20 year old comm radio made me rethink my whole bench setup
Last Tuesday I brought my old Icom to the shop in Wichita because it kept dropping frequency, and Dave, the guy who runs the place, fixed it in 15 minutes with just a hot air station and a steady hand. I had pulled that radio apart twice trying to find the issue and swapped out two boards that were probably fine. Turns out I was so busy throwing parts at it I never actually looked at the solder under a magnifier. How do you all decide when to stop guessing and just put the board under a scope?
A 20 year old radio dropping frequency sounds like it could be a dozen other things too, so yeah maybe the joint was it this time but that doesn't mean everyone needs to buy a scope. Sounds like Dave just got lucky guessing right.
