I thought the 'phone in the bathroom' date story was just a joke

Went out with someone from an app last month, met at a pizza place downtown. They excused themselves to the bathroom three times in an hour, each time for like ten minutes. I figured they were just nervous. On the third trip, I saw their phone screen light up on the table, showing a text from a friend that said 'how's the bailout mission going lol'. Has anyone else had a date basically treat you like an escape room they're trying to quit?

Wow, that's a special kind of awful. Seeing the actual text makes it so much worse than just guessing. Solidarity, that's a brutal way to find out you're just a chore to someone. Rowan's right about the hostage thing, you just want to yell at them to stop making calls and eat their free bread.
