My date tried to pay with a coupon for a place that closed two years ago.

We went to a small Italian spot in Seattle, and when the check came, he pulled out a crumpled 'buy one get one free' coupon. The waiter just stared and said, 'Sir, that restaurant burned down in 2022.' Has anyone else had a date get stuck on an old plan that just wasn't possible anymore?

Oh man, that's rough. I had a guy insist on going to a specific food truck that used to park near his old office. Drove us across town and everything. The spot was just an empty lot. I just laughed it off and said the adventure was part of the date, then suggested this dive bar I knew was close by. We got drinks instead and it turned out fine. Sometimes you just gotta roll with the awkward and pivot fast.

That's a nice way to handle it for sure. But honestly, showing up with a plan that doesn't exist feels a bit unprepared, doesn't it? A good pivot saves the date, but the original flub still says something.

I used to think a date going wrong like that was a total deal breaker. But last year a woman took me to a closed bookstore cafe she loved from college. We ended up walking to a park bench and talking for two hours instead. That shift in plans showed me more about her character than a perfect dinner ever could.
