Unpopular opinion: I finally said something when my date checked his phone at dinner, and it went better than I expected
Last Friday I sat across from a guy at a pizza place in Columbus who picked up his phone 4 times in 20 minutes, once to check a score and once to answer a group chat. On the fifth buzz I just asked if everything was okay and if he needed to take the call, and he went red, put the phone in his jacket pocket, and apologized, saying he does it without even noticing. Was I out of line to call it out like that, or should I have just let it ride and seen if he stopped on his own?
Man, I have to disagree with you here. Asking if he needed to take the call kind of put him on the spot in front of a whole restaurant. Most people would turn red and shove the phone away just to avoid the weird vibe, not because they actually learned something. If you had let it ride, you would have seen the real him, the guy who checks scores while you talk. Now you got a guy who's embarrassed, and you still don't know if he would have stopped on his own.
Waited, four times in twenty minutes? That is a phone check every five minutes while someone is sitting right there trying to talk to you. I would have been way more annoyed way earlier, not just on the fifth buzz. Honestly the score check alone would have done it for me.
