My $12 water filter failed on day 4 of the JMT, now I carry a backup
I was 60 miles into the John Muir Trail near Evolution Lake when the pump on my cheap filter gave out, leaving me with a liter of untreated stream water and no way to fill up. The original filter cost me $12 at a gas station in Bishop because I forgot mine at home, and it worked fine for 3 days until the seal cracked. Anyone else ever trust a budget piece of gear on a big route and get burned, or do you always shell out for the name brand before you hit the trail?
