Pace counting like they did before gadgets. Actually helped when my phone died on a ridge.

Been there for sure, got turned around once when my gps cut out in some thick trees. Started counting steps between landmarks just to keep my head straight. Felt kinda silly at first but it got me back to a trail marker. Now I try to remember to do it every so often just to keep the skill from getting rusty.

Pacing is actually more reliable than step counting over distance. You can measure your pace per hundred meters on flat ground first.
