Some guy on the trail told me to skip the Cow Creek detour near Helena, and I want to go back and shake his hand

How far in did you go before you turned around? I hit that detour last July and made it maybe a mile before the trail turned into a muddy mess. My boots were soaked and there was deadfall everywhere. Did he say why, like the creek was flooded or the bridge was out? I want to know what he knew that I didn't.
