The obsession with mileage over everything else on the John Muir Trail

I keep seeing people post their JMT plans focused only on hitting 20 mile days, skipping side trails like the Half Dome spur. I did the trail two summers ago and almost missed the view from Clouds Rest because I was rushing. The debate is speed versus experience. Do you think pushing big miles is missing the point of being out there?

Totally agree, that's a great point. I rushed through a section near Evolution Basin once just to make miles and later realized I barely remember it. Isn't the whole point to actually see the places you're walking through?

Ugh, that's the worst feeling! I've done the same thing on a trail and it totally defeats the purpose. Slowing down makes all the difference.

My 5-minute photo breaks saved my memory of the High Sierra.
