Warning: I was filtering my water wrong on every single trip and a ranger at Yosemite showed me why
I've done the JMT twice and always just pumped straight from whatever creek looked clean, never thought twice about it. Two weeks ago near Sunrise Lakes a ranger saw my setup and asked if I was backflushing my filter, and I had no clue what she meant. Turns out I had been pushing crud deeper into the cartridge for 3 seasons instead of rinsing it, and my flow rate dropped to a trickle by day 3 every time. Now I'm paranoid about how many trips I did with a basically clogged filter. What's your actual cleaning routine on the trail?
