Why does nobody talk about the weird pressure of giving trail advice?

I was at a gear shop last week, and this guy asked me for a good beginner route. I suggested the Lake Loop trail (it's pretty mild, you know?). Turns out, he was planning a proposal hike there! Now I feel weirdly invested in his relationship.

Did you check the weather for Lake Loop that day?

Weather apps can be way off for that trail, it sits in its own little valley. I always check the hiker forum's trail conditions page and the mountain cam at the north ridge. The temperature can drop twenty degrees once you get up past the tree line, even if the town forecast looks clear.

Giving directions feels low stakes until you realize they're for someone's first date or a family reunion spot. It's that weird weight when your casual tip becomes part of someone's core memory. Good call by @phoenix970 to check the weather, because now if it rains on his proposal hike, I'll somehow feel responsible. We hand out little pieces of info all the time, not knowing they get glued into much bigger stories. Like telling a stranger about a good coffee shop and later finding out they had their final talk with a parent there. You just hope your little suggestion doesn't ruin the plot.
