Week before last my date brought her mom to dinner and now I can't decide if I was the jerk for leaving
So two Fridays ago I drove 40 minutes to a Thai place in Fresno to meet a girl from an app. She shows up 25 minutes late with her mom in tow and says mom just happened to be in town and wanted to tag along. I rolled with it for the first hour, ordered spring rolls, made small talk about her mom's garden, all that. Then the mom starts asking about my shop, my income, why I'm not married at 34, and whether I want kids, while my date just sat there on her phone. Around the second hour I said I had an early tire job and left, and I paid for my own food only. Now my buddy says I bailed on a single mom who was just nervous and wanted a buffer, and my cousin says showing up with a parent on date one is bananas. I keep going back and forth. Was bringing her mom a red flag I read right, or did I embarrass her over nothing? Need some outside takes here.
Sounds like you read it right, honestly. Bringing mom to a first date is weird no matter how nervous she was, and the fact that she sat on her phone while her mom grilled you about your income and why you're not married tells you everything about who was actually running that table. Paying for just your food was fair since you didn't sign up for a family interview over spring rolls. Your buddy calling her a nervous single mom is being way too easy on her, that was a test and you walked out with your dignity intact.
