When my date laughed at my dignity and the waitress took her side

At a busy diner in Minneapolis last Tuesday, my date asked me to explain my passion for stamp collecting and I got so excited I knocked a full glass of iced tea across her lap. She just stared at me silent for maybe 10 seconds, then the waitress came over with napkins and said to her, "Honey, you can do better." Has anyone else had a stranger actively side with the other person mid-date, and how do you recover when the room votes against you?
