Can we talk about the 'creative' gifts that are just junk with glitter?

My sister bought me a 'custom' jar of dirt with a fake gem buried in it last Christmas. She called it a 'time capsule gift' and spent $30 on it. On one hand, she put thought into it and it's funny. On the other hand, it's literally dirt and plastic. Which side wins: effort over usefulness, or is a gift still bad if it's clever but completely useless?

Kind of feels like you're overthinking a jar of dirt. It's a gag gift, not a down payment on a house. If it made you laugh once, it did its job.

Man, you hit the nail on the head with that one! I once got a "World's Okayest Dad" mug as a gag gift, and it's been sitting on my dashboard for four years now. Every time I see that thing collecting dust and fading in the sun, it cracks me up more than any fancy coffee mug ever could. It's funny how the dumbest little things can become your favorite treasures just because they made you snort once. So yeah, a jar of dirt that's been laughed at did its job way better than some pricey gadget that just sits there.
