The year my aunt gave me a live plant in a shopping bag
She wrapped a fern in newspaper and handed it to me at Christmas, dirt falling on the carpet. Did anyone else get a gift that just made you go 'uh, thanks for the chore'?

Have you seen that study about how giving live plants as gifts actually creates more stress than joy for most people? I read it in some home decor article and it made total sense. Instead of a nice gesture, now someone's gotta be responsible for keeping a whole other living thing alive.

That "stress more than joy" thing is spot on. My sister gave me a bonsai tree once and it was basically a tiny anxiety factory. I kept it alive for a year by setting a phone alarm to mist it every morning. The day I forgot, the leaves turned yellow and I felt like a plant murderer. Here's the trick if you get stuck with one: just look up the exact care instructions on your phone right when you get it. Write the watering schedule on a sticky note and slap it on the fridge. That way you can either actually keep it going or decide within a week it's too much and give it to someone who likes plants without the guilt.
