Watched my roommate rinse raw chicken in the sink for 2 years before I said anything
So my roommate has been washing chicken under the tap before cooking it for as long as we've lived together in our Austin apartment, and I finally snapped after watching her do it for the hundredth time last Tuesday. She honestly thought she was being extra clean, like the water was getting rid of something bad on the meat. Problem is all that splashing sprays raw chicken juice across the counter, the sponge, the dish rack, everything within like 3 feet of the sink. I showed her a clip from a food safety channel where they put dye on a chicken and rinsed it, and the dye ended up all over the kitchen. She stood there with her mouth open for a solid minute. Now she pats it dry with paper towels instead and we haven't gotten sick since. Anyone else grow up being taught to rinse chicken, or was that just a thing in my house?
My mom always rinsed hers too and I did it for years without even thinking about it. Then I saw that same kind of dye video and it grossed me out so bad I stopped cold turkey. Wild how something we were taught as "clean" is actually making everything dirtier.
