I watched the 2019 Child's Play remake then the 1988 one back to back, and the difference was night and day
So me and my buddy rented both on a Friday, started with the new one, and honestly we were bored by the 40 minute mark. The new Chucky is a robot with wifi issues, which kills every scary moment because you keep thinking 'just unplug it.' Then we put on the original, and within 20 minutes that little doll rolling around in a chair had us both on edge in a way the remake never managed. It is not about gore or budget, it is that the old one made Chucky a mean little guy with a grudge instead of a glitchy smart speaker. Anyway, if you are doing a remake marathon, watch the 1988 version and skip the new one, or am I being too harsh on it?
I heard the same thing from a buddy who runs a horror podcast, said the remake treats Chucky like a broken Alexa and that is the whole problem. What gets me is the original had that whole thing where Charles Lee Ray transfers his soul through a voodoo chant, so the doll has a real reason to be evil and a person behind it. The new one is just a smart toy that got its safety settings turned off, which is a tech horror plot, not a killer doll plot. You are not being too harsh, the 1988 one earns its scares and the remake just coasts on the name.
