Lost $300 on a fence gate the HOA made me tear down
Built a solid wooden gate last month for my side yard, cost me $300 in lumber and two weekends, then the HOA sent a letter saying it violated the 4-foot height rule. Has anyone else fought an HOA over a fence and actually won, or is it just throwing more money away?
Man, that stings. It's like the whole world is built on rules nobody tells you about until you break them. I see it all the time, not just with HOAs but with city codes, apartment leases, even parking lots. You think you're doing something reasonable, then someone pulls out a rulebook from 1987 and you're the bad guy. Your $300 gate is just a small example of how much power these little groups have to mess with your stuff. The sad part is, fighting it usually costs more in time and stress than the gate did. My take, and your mileage may vary, is to check every single rule twice before you build anything, even if it feels like overkill.
