Spent 14 months fighting my HOA over a fence, and I was wrong about who the bad neighbor was
Everyone in this community loves to hate the HOA and I get it, I really do. But after 14 months of back and forth over a 6 foot cedar privacy fence on my property line in Boise, I have to say it: my neighbor Greg was the real problem, not the board. Here is what actually happened. Greg waited until I was out of town for a wedding and then called the city to report my fence as a code violation, claiming it was 3 inches over the height limit. The inspector came out, measured it at 6 feet 2 inches, and I had to pay $340 for a variance hearing just to keep a fence I had built to match the one already on Greg's side. The part that still gets me is that his own fence, the one facing my yard, is the exact same height and has been for 9 years. I sat in that hearing and watched four neighbors show up to speak for me, and Greg never showed his face. So when people here say the HOA is always the villain, I want to know how many of you have dealt with a neighbor who weaponizes the rules against you while breaking them himself. What did you do about it, because I am still figuring out how to live next to this guy.
