The HOA letter about my lawn flags that started a 3-week feud with the retiree next door
So last month I put up two small political signs in my front yard, nothing crazy. Within 48 hours I got a certified letter from the HOA saying I was in violation of the 'no signage' rule. Fine. I took them down. But my neighbor Gary, the guy who retired from the bank and walks his dog at 6am sharp, he starts putting up his own signs the very next week. Same size, same placement. I waited. Nothing happened. When I asked the HOA president about it she said 'his signs are technically decorative.' So I called Gary out on it over the fence and he laughed and said 'the rule only bites if someone complains, and nobody complains about my signs.' Now I'm stuck. Do I file a formal complaint about his signs to prove a point, or do I let it go because honestly, his signs are a bit more tasteful than mine were? Has anyone else dealt with this selective enforcement stuff? How did you handle it without making the whole block miserable?
What exactly did the HOA president say when you asked why your signs got flagged and his didn't? The "decorative" excuse sounds like she just made it up on the spot to avoid a fight. If she put that in writing you'd have something real to work with instead of just Gary running his mouth.
