Serious question, has anyone else had a neighbor give them baking advice that actually ruined a recipe?

A lady at my local grocery store in Omaha told me to double the baking powder in my banana bread 'for extra lift', but it just made the whole thing taste bitter and metallic. What's the worst baking tip you've ever gotten from someone?

Honestly, sometimes those weird tips work out. My grandma always used margarine in pie crust and it was flaky as anything. Maybe @the_finley's aunt just had a bad recipe or the wrong brand.

My aunt swore by using margarine instead of butter in sugar cookies because it was cheaper. The texture was like eating sweetened cardboard, and they spread into one giant flat sheet on the pan. I still get teased about my "cookie puddle" from three years ago. Some advice is just people being weirdly loyal to their own bad habits, lol.

That cookie puddle story is brutal, @the_finley. Did your aunt ever explain why she stuck with margarine after seeing the results? Like, was it just the cost thing, or did she have some old belief that it was actually better for baking?
