A guy argued with me for 20 minutes at the Jackson barber expo over whether hot towels actually do anything
So I was at the trade show in Jackson back in March and this older barber from Memphis stopped me at the towel warmer booth. He swore hot towels are just a gimmick and that cold shave cream works fine, said he'd been cutting 30 a day for 22 years without them. I told him a warm towel softens the whiskers and opens the pores, and he said that's just folk talk with no proof behind it. I've used them on every shave for 9 years and my clients ask for the towel before they ask for the shave. So which is it, are we all just doing it because we saw it somewhere, or does that heat actually change the cut?
Twenty two years and thirty cuts a day means he's fast, and speed beats a towel every time when you're already good. But warm hair cuts easier, it's physics, the blade slides through softer whiskers instead of dragging. I've tested it on my own face, same razor, one side toweled, one side not, and the toweled side was smoother with less pull. He's not wrong that cold cream works, he's just wrong that the heat does nothing.
