A guy at the Bayside Barber Expo in Portland told me to quit using clippers on fades and I'm still mad he was half right
So this was back in March at the expo, booth 214 I think, some older barber from Tacoma. I'm doing a demo fade on a mannequin with my Wahl cordless like I have for nine years. He watches for a bit and says, real quiet, "you're letting the clipper hide your mistakes."
I wanted to argue. Popular thing now is guard work, lever play, all that. Speed sells. But he had me do one fade with just scissors over comb and a straight razor at the end and it took me 22 minutes instead of 9. Looked cleaner though. Client necks don't get chewed up either.
I still use clippers on the bulk, I'm not a martyr. But I do the blend by hand now on anyone who sits still. Anyone else get humbled at a show like that or is it just me
Used to roll my eyes at the old school guys who said clippers make you lazy. Figured they were just stuck in their ways and mad the new tools made us faster. Then I watched a barber do a full scissor fade at a shop in my city and the blend was just soft, no lines, no track marks at all. Took him way longer but the cut looked like it grew out of the guy's head. Changed how I look at it after that.
