Changed my mind about thinning shears on thick hair
I always used regular shears for everything. But after a client with super thick curly hair said my texture was uneven, I tried blending shears on the top layer instead of point cutting. Made a huge difference in the flow. Anyone else switch up their tool mid-cut and get better results?

My 3 years with ultra thick coarse hair clients taught me that texture shears actually flatten out the shape more than point cutting does. If you hit the same section twice with blending shears, you get these weird blunt chunks that don't move naturally. I had a client with 4c hair where the thinning shears left visible lines even on the top layer, and I had to fix it with regular scissors and layers. Point cutting lets me see exactly where the weight is falling and remove it piece by piece. For thick hair especially, those shears take out too much structure too fast.

Haha I feel attacked because I definitely butchered my own hair with thinning shears trying to save money during lockdown. Looked like a hedgehog that lost a fight with a lawnmower for like three months. But I get what you're saying about point cutting being more controlled - I think for people like me who are NOT professionals, grabbing texture shears feels safer but actually makes things worse cause you can't see what you're doing. The visible lines thing is real though, I had a friend with 4c hair who got those weird straight lines in a curly cut and it took forever to grow out. Maybe it's just me but I feel like point cutting requires way more skill but gives way better results for thick hair.

Man oh man I gotta disagree here. Thinning shears actually saved my butt on thick curly hair because point cutting would leave choppy ends when the curls spring back unevenly.
