Watched a guy in Louisville taper with just his comb and it fixed my whole fade game
I was at a shop in Louisville visiting my brother and the guy in the chair next to me did a skin fade with nothing but clippers, a comb, and his bare hands. No guards above a 1, no fancy lever work, and it came out cleaner than anything I was turning out at the time. That was about 4 months into my apprenticeship, and I had been leaning on guard numbers like they were gospel. He told me the comb sets the line and the clippers just follow, which sounds obvious until you watch someone actually do it. I went home and spent two Saturdays just doing comb work on a mannequin head, no guards at all. Now I rough everything in with a 1 and finish by hand, and my blends stopped stair-stepping. Curious if anyone here still cuts the old way or if guards took over everywhere.
