PSA: The guy at the Portland airport showed me the soap tap trick after 3 years of gross dispensers
I was washing up at the Portland airport last month and this older guy next to me saw me fighting the motion sensor soap thing. He laughed and said "watch this" then waved his hand right under the nozzle about two inches away instead of the full six inches I always did. The thing spit out a perfect glob instantly. I tried it at my gym and the Target on 5th and it worked at both, no more waving like an idiot for 10 seconds. Been dealing with this for years and one random dude fixed it in 4 seconds. Anyone else know the right distance for these things or is it just random luck?
That two inch thing is real, I figured it out by accident at a rest stop in Oregon last year. Was holding my kid's cup under there to rinse it and the soap shot out right away, closer than I ever put my bare hand. Tried it at the grocery store by my house and it worked there too. What I found is the sensors on most of them have a short range, so the soap only fires when you're basically right up on it. The six inch thing people do comes from the paper towel ones, those want you back a bit or they never stop. So now I just poke my hand right up in there and it works almost every time. Still get the odd one that's just busted or out of soap, but its way better than standing there flapping around.
