I rebuilt a customer's seized bottom bracket last Tuesday and found 14 ball bearings in a 9 bearing cup
A guy rolled into my shop on 4th Street last Tuesday with a bottom bracket that felt like gravel. When I cracked it open, someone had jammed 14 loose ball bearings into a cup built for 9, and the retainer was bent all to hell. Bearings were grinding against the spindle and the cup walls. Has anyone else seen a customer try to "fix" their own BB by just adding more balls, or is this a one-off?
That "14 loose ball bearings into a cup built for 9" thing used to make me roll my eyes at the guy, until I saw it twice more in one month. Now I just figure folks don't know any better and pack it right for em.
