Can we talk about the guy who tried to school me on Batman's origin at a coffee shop?

I was just reading my comic at a cafe in Austin last Tuesday when some dude straight up interrupts me. He points at my copy of Year One and says 'you know that's not even the real origin, right?' Like he had some secret knowledge I was missing. He went on for 5 minutes about how the real Batman started in Detective Comics 27 and I should throw away my 'modern garbage'. Has anyone else run into these gatekeeper types who act like anything after 1985 doesn't count?

Can we talk about cold canned soup straight from the tin?

I know it sounds gross, but hear me out. Last winter at a motel in Flagstaff, the microwave was busted and I was starving at 2am. I cracked open a can of tomato soup and ate it cold with a spoon. It was weirdly refreshing, like a savory smoothie. Is this a hill anyone else is willing to die on, or am I just crazy?

Hit 10,000 hours on my Fluke 87V last week

I was doing a routine check on a Garmin G5000 at the hangar in Tucson when I glanced at the meter and realized it had logged over 10,000 hours of use. That thing has been through three drop tests, a coffee spill, and one time a mechanic stepped on it. It still reads within spec, which honestly surprised me given how hard I am on gear. Anyone else have a tool that just won't quit no matter what you put it through?

The before and after of my neighbor's yard over 6 weeks was wild

My neighbor Bob spent every Saturday for a month blowing leaves from his lawn into a pile, then just left them there. He was gone for work, so after 3 weeks the pile turned into a muddy, rotting mess that smelled awful. Then on week 4 he came out with a tarp and a shovel, hauled it all to the curb, and laid down fresh pine straw in one afternoon. The difference was like night and day, but I still can't figure out why he let it sit that long. Has anyone else had a neighbor do something weird like that with yard work?

Had a cashier tell me to stop buying cheap trash bags and she was right

I was at the Target on Broadway last Tuesday buying the store brand 13-gallon kitchen bags for the third time in two months. The cashier, maybe 60 years old, looked at them and said "those rip every time, don't they?" I laughed and admitted yeah, every single bag ended up with a hole in the bottom. She pointed me to the Glad ForceFlex ones sitting right next to them, same aisle, no extra trip. I grabbed a box on my way out and honestly haven't had a blowout since. Anyone else have a random stranger save them from a bad product habit?

Spent 20 minutes watching a smart fridge argue with itself at Best Buy

I was at the Best Buy in Austin last Saturday and watched this Samsung smart fridge get stuck in a loop. It kept flashing a notification saying 'Door ajar' even though nobody was touching it. Then the AI voice assistant started asking if I wanted to add milk to my shopping list. I stood there for 20 minutes and counted 47 times it repeated the same cycle. Felt like I was watching a robot having a meltdown over not being able to close its own door. Has anyone else seen smart appliances just completely lose it in a store like that?

I finally stopped paying for overpriced airport water

Got stuck at LAX for 6 hours last month and spent $8 on a bottle of water from one of those kiosks. I was so annoyed I looked up if there's a trick to it. Turns out you can just ask any coffee shop or bar for a cup of tap water for free. Has anyone else tried this or do you just bring an empty bottle through security?

I swear by my $12 TUL fine tip pen set but my friend's is dead in a week

I dropped $12 on a pack of TUL fine tip gel pens at Office Depot back in March and they've been my go-to for my monthly spreads. My partner tried the same pack and the black one dried out after 7 days of light use. Is there a bad batch going around or am I just lucky so far?

That time a SEO guy at a meetup told me link velocity doesn't matter

I was at a backlink meetup in Austin last spring and this one dude kept insisting link velocity is a myth. He said Google doesn't care if you get 50 links in a day or a year. I pushed back and showed him data from a client site where we got 30 links in one week and saw a 20% traffic jump. He just shrugged and said it was coincidence. Has anyone else run into people who totally dismiss link velocity?

Cleaned a flue in Salem last week that had a 30-year-old squirrel stash inside

Pulled up to a house in Salem, Massachusetts, lady says her fireplace has been smoking for years. I climb up top with my camera and see the flue is basically packed to the top with acorns and old shell bits. Took me about 2 hours to vacuum it all out with my heavy duty shop vac. The difference after I was done was night and day - she could actually see daylight through the chimney. Has anyone else found a crazy animal stash like that?
