Torn between fixing the AC or just junking my 2005 Civic

I bought a 2005 Civic for $1500 three months ago and the AC compressor gave out last week. A shop in Phoenix quoted me $900 to fix it, which is more than half what I paid for the car. Do I drop the cash to keep it cool through summer, or should I just sell it to a scrapper and start over? Anyone been in this spot with an older car and a big repair bill?

Used to baby my fiddle leaf fig with misting and filtered water - now I just dump tap water on it

I was one of those people who bought a hygrometer and measured every drop of water for my fiddle leaf fig. Then last summer I went on a 2 week trip and forgot to ask my roommate to water it. Came back and the thing had dropped 4 leaves but somehow pushed out 2 new ones from the stress. Now I just water it with straight tap water every Sunday when I remember. It's actually grown 8 inches in 6 months compared to the 2 inches the year before. Has anyone else had their plants do better when they stopped caring so much?

Why does nobody talk about how awkward conventions get after 3 days

I went to Boston Comic Con last month and by Sunday everyone was just shuffling around with that stale smell and red eyes, nobody even buying comics anymore. Has anyone else noticed the vibe totally shifts after Saturday or is it just me?

Critique from a beta reader made me ditch my overdone metaphors

I had this beta reader tell me my first chapter had more similes than a poetry slam. She pointed out three in one paragraph and asked if the forest really needed to be described as 'a thousand whispering secrets.' I changed my approach after that, now I use one strong image per scene max. Anyone else have a reader call out a habit you didn't notice you had?

That Wednesday last fall where every single panel I installed had a bad backup battery

Opened three brand new DSC panels in a row and all three had dead backup batteries straight out of the box. Took me twice as long to finish the route because I had to swap them at the supply house. Has anyone else had a run of bad parts like that or did I just hit the unlucky jackpot?

Job in a Denver office building changed how I handle stairs

Back in 2018 I got a gig installing carpet in a 5 story office building in downtown Denver. The stairs were these weird curved ones with metal nosing that just would not lay flat no matter what I tried. After three days of fighting it, the foreman walked over and showed me how to notch the backing at 2 inch intervals along the curve. Let the carpet bend naturally instead of fighting it. I still do that on every set of stairs now, straight or curved. Anyone else run into stair configurations that forced you to change your method?

Unpopular opinion: Kickstarter board games are killing local game nights

Last month my group tried to play three Kickstarter games someone brought. Two had rulebooks that contradicted themselves. The third had minis that didn't fit in the box. We gave up after 45 minutes and played Catan from 2014 instead. Anyone else notice these crowdfunded games skipping basic playtesting?

Settled on HubSpot over Salesforce after a 6 month trial

We ran both for a quarter with 12 users each. HubSpot's reporting was way less painful to set up, even if Salesforce has more raw power. Anyone else make the switch and regret it later?

Spent $60 on a plastic longbox for my comics and it warped in 2 months

I bought this cheap plastic longbox from a discount bin at a con back in March. Thought I was saving cash compared to the $40 cardboard ones or the expensive metal cabinets. Stored it in my basement against an outside wall and by May the whole thing bowed out like a banana. Lost a few bagged books at the bottom that got crimped because the plastic bent so bad. Anybody else run into storage disasters that wrecked their collection?

Met a pitmaster in Lockhart who changed how I trim brisket

I was down at Smitty's Market in Lockhart last spring watching this older guy prep a load of briskets. He told me to stop being so precious about fat cap thickness and just feel for the soft spots with my hand. Has anyone else run into a pitmaster who gave them advice that flew in the face of everything they read online?
