Just switched from threaded headsets to sealed cartridge bearings on my 1994 Rockhopper resto
I put off the swap for two seasons because the old loose ball setup felt "period correct," but after repacking the same gritty bearings three times in one rainy Portland winter I finally caved and the difference in how it tracks through gravel is night and day, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has done this on an old steel frame and regretted losing that vintage feel.
Did you swap the fork too or just press new cups into the stock Tange? Curious because a lot of those old Rockhopper forks have a crown race seat that's already chewed up from years of loose balls, and that can make the cartridges feel notchy no matter how fresh they are. Also what headset did you go with, and did you have to face the head tube first? Trying to figure out if my 93 frame is even worth the machine shop trip.
