The day we dredged up a whole sunken picnic table

We were working the cutterhead on the old Columbia River channel near Longview, and the bucket brought up what we thought was a huge log. Turned out to be a full wooden picnic table, benches and all, wrapped in about 50 feet of old anchor chain. Took us three hours to cut it all free without stopping the whole operation. Has anyone else pulled up something that ridiculous from the mud?

Just hit 5000 hours on our old Haas VF-2 and it's still holding tenths

I was sure we'd need a major rebuild by 4000, but the last job ran within .0003 across the whole batch. What's the most hours you've put on a machine before it needed serious work?

Rant: Had to pick between a $200 camera scope and just trusting my brush in a tight Philly flue.

Old brick row house, flue was maybe 8 by 8. Couldn't see a thing past the first bend. Boss wanted me to just run the brush and hope. I bought the scope myself. Found a huge mortar chunk and a bird nest we would have just pushed down. Who else has paid out of pocket for a tool the shop should have?

Just lost a full day's pay because of a bad cafe wifi setup in Lisbon

Had a big video call with a new client yesterday, picked a cafe with good reviews. The wifi was strong at first, but cut out right as I was showing my portfolio. I had to use my phone's data to finish, which ate up my whole plan and cost me $85. The cafe owner just shrugged and said 'it happens sometimes'... Has anyone found a solid way to test a cafe's connection before you have to rely on it?

Stopped fighting the tide for better dredge cuts

I used to try and force a straight cut line no matter what, even when the tide was pulling hard. On a job in Mobile Bay last fall, I was fighting a 3 knot current for hours, burning fuel and making a mess. My old boss told me to just go with the flow, literally. Now I set my cut line at a slight angle to the current, letting it help push the material into the suction head. It feels wrong at first, like you're not doing it right, but the cut is cleaner and the pump doesn't work as hard. I save about 15% on fuel on a bad tide day now. Anyone else try working with the current instead of against it?

Just had a nightmare install in a 1970s split-level that changed my prep work forever

I was in this house in Akron last month, laying carpet in the sunken living room. The old pad was totally glued down, so I started scraping. My scraper hit something solid, and I found a whole section of the subfloor was actually 1/4 inch plywood just nailed over the original boards. The homeowner had no idea. I had to stop, go get a sheet of 3/4 inch OSB, and spend two extra hours fixing it before I could even think about tack strips. Now I sound like a broken record, but I tap and probe every single square foot of subfloor before I even unroll the new pad. Anyone else gotten burned by a hidden subfloor surprise like that?

My old boss in Phoenix always said to double-check the panel's ground before leaving. I didn't listen on a job yesterday.

It was a simple swap to a new keypad at a small office. Everything tested fine, so I packed up. Got a call this morning that the whole system was dead. Drove back, and sure enough, the ground wire had come loose from the terminal block. Took me 45 minutes to fix and cost me the morning. He was right. How do you guys make sure your grounds are solid? I'm thinking of adding a drop of locktite to the screw.

I finally heard a pilot say 'just get it done' to a new guy about a deferred write-up

It was for a minor avionics light, but the tone made my skin crawl. How do you handle that pressure when you know signing it off isn't right? I told the kid to grab the MEL manual and we'd do it by the book.

My friend in Denver had a full-on meltdown when I used a generic cola at his cookout last week

He actually yelled 'That's not the real thing!' and made me pour it out before he'd let me add it to the punch bowl, which makes me wonder, has anyone else seen brand loyalty get this intense over something so small?

Pro tip: check the frame alignment on every used bike that comes in

I was chatting with a mechanic from a shop in Portland, and she said she caught a cracked seat tube on a bike that looked fine from the outside. She told me, 'We assume the frame is straight, but we should assume it's not.' That hit different because I had a customer's bike come back last month with a shifting issue I couldn't solve, and it was a bent chainstay I missed. How many of you do a full frame check as a standard step?
