Can we talk about how many houseplants actually survive in low light?

I keep seeing posts saying snake plants and pothos will thrive in a dark corner with no windows. That surprised me because I actually tested it last winter in my basement in Columbus. I put a snake plant in a spot that got maybe 2 hours of indirect light a day. After 4 months, it was pale and droopy, barely alive. I looked up the actual light requirements and found out most of those "low light" labels are just marketing. Even snake plants need medium indirect light to really grow. It made me wonder how many people think they're bad at plants when really they just got sold bad info. Has anyone else found a plant that actually shocked them with how much light it needs?

Spent $180 on a fancy soil testing kit only to get results that told me nothing I didn't already know

I grabbed one of those digital soil testers from a gardening supply website back in March. Paid about $180 for it, thought it would tell me exactly what my raised beds needed for tomatoes and peppers. First test said my pH was fine but the nitrogen was off the charts, second test a week later said nitrogen was low. Now I'm wondering if those cheap $15 chemical test strips are actually more reliable. Has anyone else had this happen with electronic testers or am I just unlucky?

Tried watering my snake plant with tap water versus filtered water for two months straight.

The filtered one shot up three new leaves while the tap water one barely grew and got those ugly brown tips, has anyone else seen a difference like that with their houseplants?

Talked to a greenhouse worker and got schooled on soil pH

I was at a local nursery last Saturday picking up some ferns and this guy who works in their greenhouse started chatting with me. He asked what I was growing and when I said tomatoes he just laughed and said your pH is probably off. I tested it and he was right, it was way too alkaline. Now I'm actually testing my soil before planting anything and it's wild how much difference it makes. Anybody else get humbled by a random employee at a garden center?

Used to baby my fiddle leaf fig with misting and filtered water - now I just dump tap water on it

I was one of those people who bought a hygrometer and measured every drop of water for my fiddle leaf fig. Then last summer I went on a 2 week trip and forgot to ask my roommate to water it. Came back and the thing had dropped 4 leaves but somehow pushed out 2 new ones from the stress. Now I just water it with straight tap water every Sunday when I remember. It's actually grown 8 inches in 6 months compared to the 2 inches the year before. Has anyone else had their plants do better when they stopped caring so much?

My prize succulent rotted from the inside out last month

Had this massive echeveria I'd been growing for 2 years on my kitchen windowsill in Denver. I watered it every 10 days like clockwork but I guess the pot didn't drain right. One morning I touched the base and it just collapsed into mush. Lost the whole plant except for 3 tiny leaves I managed to prop. Has anyone else had a succulent fail on them even when you followed the rules?

Tried growing tomatoes in pure compost instead of soil mix - got completely different results than I expected

I planted two sets of cherry tomatoes last spring. One in my usual 50/50 mix of garden soil and bagged compost. The other in nothing but straight compost from my local nursery's pile. The straight compost ones grew twice as fast at first, then around August they just stopped producing and the leaves curled up bad. The soil mix ones kept going until October. Anyone else tried this and seen the same thing? Was the compost too hot for long term growth?

Rant: I picked a ficus over a monstera for my dark apartment and it's dying

My north facing living room only gets like 2 hours of weak light a day, so I chose a ficus lyrata thinking it'd handle low light better than a monstera. After 3 months of droopy leaves and spider mites, I finally swapped it for a monstera that's thriving with just a cheap grow light from Amazon. Anyone else regret trusting those 'low light' labels on plants?

Tried bottom watering my snake plant for 6 weeks

I switched my snake plant to bottom watering back in February to avoid fungus gnats. After 6 weeks the roots grew all the way through the drainage hole and got stuck in the tray. Has anyone else had this issue with bottom watering succulents?

Vent: My ficus drop its leaves like it was a drama queen

I moved my ficus lyrata about 2 feet closer to a south window last Sunday and by Wednesday it had shed like 14 leaves all over my rug. I thought maybe it was shock from the change but I'm starting to think it just hates my apartment in general. Has anyone else had a ficus just give up on life for no obvious reason?

Was at the garden center last Saturday grabbing soil. This older lady was picking through the clearance rack. She told her friend she waits until plants look totally wrecked. Then she buys them for 75% off and nurses them back. I watched her grab a crispy fern with like two green fronds left. Pothos vs. philodendron comparison after 3 months at my desk

I always thought pothos and philodendron were basically the same plant, but after keeping both on my cubicle shelf for 3 months the difference is wild. The philodendron grew these big split leaves while the pothos just stayed leggy and plain. I'm near a north facing window in downtown Dallas and the philodendron just soaked up the low light way better. Has anyone else found one easier to keep alive than the other?
