The 14 episode rule I stole from a stranger at a coffee shop bar

I was in Portland waiting for my latte when this guy next to me said he gives every show exactly 14 episodes before bailing, no exceptions. He argued that most shows figure out their tone by then, so if they still can't hook you, they never will. Do you stick with a show hoping it gets better or do you have a specific episode count you swear by?

Wait, Portland and he actually counted exactly 14 episodes, like not 13 or 15, but a hard 14? That's such a weirdly specific number that I almost respect it, but I'd probably tap out by episode 3 if I'm not feeling it.
