Warning: I switched from coal to propane in my forge last month and the fire scale situation surprised me
So I had been running bituminous coal in my old rivet forge for about 4 years and loved the smell and the control, but my neighbor started complaining about the smoke drifting into his garage. I had to pick between building a taller chimney setup or just buying a propane forge, and I went with a 2 burner Devil Forge off Amazon for $220. First week I almost gave up because the heat felt too clean and I kept burning my tongs hand closer than I should. But here is the thing nobody told me, the fire scale on my 1084 blades dropped way down, like maybe half of what I was scraping off after coal. My quench lines also came out more even because I can actually see the color of the steel without squinting through smoke. I miss the crusty look coal gives but my lungs and my neighbor are happier. Anyone here run both and got a trick for reading temps in a propane forge without a thermocouple?
