I blamed Gen X for killing small towns until my trip to Ohio last month
I always said Gen X let all the small town main streets die because they all moved to the cities in the 90s. Then last month I drove through Chillicothe, Ohio for a wedding and counted 9 empty storefronts on one block. But my uncle, who is 54, pulled out old photos from 1988 and showed me the same block was already half empty back then, way before his friends left. The mill closed in 1982 and Walmart came in 1990, so the damage started with the Silent Generation running things. Anyone else have a moment where the blame landed on a totally different age group than you expected?
