My mom wouldn't let me get a job in high school because she wanted me home by 4, and I just heard her tell my cousin she was 'protecting my childhood'
So I'm 26 now and still kinda figuring out money stuff, and over Thanksgiving at my aunt's place in Modesto my mom was talking to my cousin who's 17 and just got hired at a pizza place, and my mom goes, 'I always kept Julia home because I didn't want her to miss her childhood.' I almost choked on a roll. She never said it like that before. The actual rule was I had to be home by 4 every day, no exceptions, and when I asked about a job at the grocery store two blocks away she said no because 'family time matters.' The thing is my parents both worked full time, so most days that 4 o'clock rule meant I sat alone in the house until 6. I didn't get a real job until I was 20 and I had zero clue how to do a W-4 or talk to a manager or handle my own cash. My cousin just shrugged and kept eating, but I sat there doing math on about six years of afternoons where I could have been learning something. Is this one of those things where they actually thought they were doing good, or do some parents just want you home so they know where you are?
