Why I stopped blaming my mom for the no-sleepover rule at 14

Three years ago I found out my mom's own sleepover at 15 ended with a guy sneaking in and her best friend never speaking to her again, so she panicked and banned them for me. I always called it the dumbest rule growing up but now I get the fear behind it. Did your parents have a weird rule that actually traced back to one bad night they had?

Wait, her best friend never spoke to her again? That part hit me hard, not just the guy sneaking in. Losing your best friend over one dumb night at 15 would mess anyone up for life. Your mom probably never told you that part because it still hurts to think about. It kind of makes sense why she went straight to a full ban instead of just talking to you about it.
