Sounds like a fast track to a bad time. That system would just make me sad every time I looked at the shelf. Why would you want to be reminded of a heavy breakup or a dead friend when you're trying to have fun?

Wait, why assume emotional weight is only about sad stuff? Couldn't a game with huge emotional weight be the one you played with your kid for the first time, or the one your whole friend group laughed through for a whole summer? That kind of system would put the most meaningful fun right at the front. It's not a sadness shelf, it's a highlight reel.

Feel for that guy completely. My own shelves are a mess of stuff I kept just because it meant something once. That system probably makes picking a game way more honest.
