Rough shift at the Port of Houston, had to improvise fast
Last Tuesday we had a feedwater heater tube bundle that kept shifting on the lift, took us almost 4 hours just to get it seated right at the Port of Houston. The crane operator had to re-rig twice because my choker angle was off by 10 degrees, felt like I was back in my first year. Ended up using a come-along and a stack of 2x4s to nudge it, which is not in any manual I've seen. Anyone else had to MacGyver a stubborn bundle out there or is it just me?
A come-along and 2x4s got the job done and that's what counts. Two years ago I would've said stick to the rigging tables no matter what, but then I watched a guy spend six hours fighting a pump skid when a ratchet strap would've fixed it in twenty minutes. That tube bundle doesn't care what the manual says, it just cares about getting seated without cracking a tube. Sometimes the book answer and the real answer are two different things, and you learn that the hard way. Ten degrees off on a choker will humble you, but you got it done without wrecking anything.
