Rubbed a brisket with straight coffee grounds on a whim and the bark turned out like charcoal

I tried it on a 12-pound packer last Sunday from a local farm in Vermont and the crust was so bitter and hard I had to shave it off with a knife, has anyone else had a rub experiment go that wrong?

TIL that hot glue on a cracked radiator hose can get you 20 miles home

My buddy Dave in a AutoZone parking lot in Tucson told me to shove a bolt in the hose and wrap it with electrical tape after I laughed at him for suggesting it, and I drove that 87 Civic home without overheating, so now I wonder what other half-baked fixes actually work well enough to call a car a treasure.

Ran a 0.0005 depth of cut on a spring pass and it fixed my finish issues

I was fighting with chatter marks on a 316 stainless part for three days straight. Decided to try a 0.0005 spring pass at 400 RPM as a last resort before re-grinding my insert. The finish came out mirror smooth and I still don't fully understand why it worked. Has anyone else seen a tiny cut like that actually cure a chatter problem?

Hot take: swapping to self-leveling compound for monitor stand bases

I used to spend forever filing and sanding down 3D printed bases to get them flat, but after a guy at a shop in Portland showed me a thin pour of self-leveling compound on a warped piece last spring, I never looked back. Has anyone else found a weird shortcut that totally changed how you prep parts?

Found a 200-year-old chimney sweep log in an old house I was cleaning

I was working a job in an 1850s row house in Baltimore last month and found a handwritten log tucked behind a loose brick in the flue. The sweep back in 1832 recorded cleaning 14 chimneys in one day and noted which ones had "ill-drawn flues" that needed extra work. Who knew sweeps back then kept such detailed records? Has anyone else found old tools or notes tucked away in a chimney?

Gas station tacos vs fast food tacos - which one burned me worse?

I grabbed a pair of gas station tacos from a place called Quickstop in Phoenix for $3.50 last Tuesday after my regular lunch spot was closed. Honestly, they were decent - way better than the $6.50 Taco Bell box I usually get, but I had the runs by 3pm. So the question is: do you risk the cheap thrill for less money, or stick with the slightly more expensive chain that's safer? Has anyone else gambled on a gas station hot case and won?

Just found out I've buried over 500 feet of Romex in one house

I was wiring up a basement remodel in a split level outside Denver and kept pulling wire for what felt like forever. Had to run 12 circuits through the floor joists and then down into the crawl space for the new family room. At the end of the day I added up all the runs on my spool and realized I had used over 500 feet just for that one job. Has anyone else added up their total wire for a single house and been surprised?

That grocery store self-checkout AI that tracked me as a shoplifter

I stopped at the Kroger on 5th street last Tuesday to grab a bag of apples and a loaf of bread. The self-checkout camera flagged me for 'unscanned item' even though I scanned both things right in front of it. Now they've got these AI systems watching every move, but what happens when it falsely accuses someone who can't prove their innocence? On one hand it cuts theft, on the other hand it treats honest folks like criminals before they even do anything wrong. Which side do you lean on for these retail surveillance tools?

Old sous chef said 'never trust a quiet prep cook' and I laughed it off

This guy had 20 years in the biz and told me that the quiet ones are hiding something, like bad knife skills or stolen ingredients. Last week our new prep guy barely spoke for two months, then I caught him sneaking a whole prime rib into his bag after close. Update: I thought booking flights on Tuesday was the best deal, but my sister proved me wrong

My sister just got back from a trip to Lisbon and told me she saved a bunch by booking her flight on a Sunday night. She said the airline's own app had a flash sale that wasn't showing up on the big search sites (she saved about $75 each way). I always heard Tuesday was the magic day, so I checked for my own trip to Chicago next month, and sure enough, the prices dipped lower over the weekend. I guess the old rule isn't as solid anymore with how often prices change now. Has anyone else noticed a better day to check for flights lately, or is it just totally random?
