Showerthought: a guy in my Discord got called out for a 2011 tweet and I finally figured out why these things blow up unevenly
I was in a gaming Discord last week and some guy got dragged for a tweet he posted in 2011 when he was 19. Somebody dug it up, screen grabbed it, and it spread to Twitter by Tuesday. Here is the thing I noticed. Nobody in our Discord actually cared about the tweet itself. They cared that he had spent the past month being smug about other people's old posts. Two guys I know from that server went back and forth on whether he deserved it, and the whole fight was really about how annoying he had been lately, not about the joke from 13 years ago. It made me think most cancellations are less about the original thing and more about a bill coming due for bad behavior nobody could call out until they had a reason. Like the tweet is just the excuse everyone was waiting for. Which is kind of unfair, honestly, since the 19 year old who typed it is not the same guy who was being a jerk last month. Has anyone else seen a call out where the actual post was almost beside the point and everyone was really mad about something else?
