TIL a $9 drain snake beats a $50 chemical route or a plumber's visit

Last Tuesday my shower drain clogged up for the third time this year. I was about to order another bottle of that enzyme stuff that smells like rotten eggs, but my neighbor Dave from two doors over stopped by with a cheap plastic drain snake from Ace. Ten minutes of twisting and pulling, and I pulled out a wad of hair the size of a small hamster. That $9 tool just saved me either $14 on chemicals that never fully worked or a $180 plumber callout. I've been using harsh stuff for years because I thought snakes were only for pros, but the plastic one flexes right past the trap. Now the drain actually drains faster than it did when I first moved in here. Has anyone else had this moment where the simplest tool replaced a whole routine of products?

My drain snake only works on surface clogs, and the last time it actually pushed the mess deeper into the pipes.
