Our book club argued over a $4 paperback and it got weird fast

Last month in our Portland group, we read two versions of the same classic, one was the old Penguin copy and the other was a modern annotated edition. The whole debate boiled down to footnotes versus flow, and honestly the annotated one won by a mile because half our members kept getting lost in the original. But then Carol started quoting marginalia from 1987 like it was gospel and we spent 45 minutes on a single comma. Has anyone else had a club night derailed by a specific edition choice, or do we just need better ground rules?
