The day our book club argued about a comma for 40 minutes

Last Thursday we split right down the middle over one sentence in 'The Road'. Half said it was a pause, the other half said it was a breath. Has anyone else had a tiny grammar detail just explode a whole meeting?

Wow, seriously? A comma started a 40 minute fight? That's wild. I can't even get my crew to agree on where to park the truck for more than five minutes.
