Update: I paid $45 to join a book club that quit reading books
I need to warn people about this. Back in January I paid $45 for a year membership to a local book club here in Boise, mostly because the flyer at the library said we would read one novel a month and talk about it. First two meetings were fine. Then by March people started showing up without finishing the book, and by May we never talked about the book at all. It turned into a two hour hangout where everyone just scrolled their phones and argued about which streaming show was better. The last straw was when the guy who runs it showed up with a stack of magazines and said novels were too long for busy people. I asked for my money back and he laughed. My big problem with the whole thing is that everyone online acts like any book club is better than no book club, and I disagree. A group that does not read is just a slow meetup with extra steps. Has anyone else dealt with a club that stopped reading the actual books, and did you bail or try to fix it?
