Serious question, has anyone else had a book spine crack after using a specific glue?

I bound a small journal with PVA glue from a new brand, and the spine split cleanly after two days of normal use. I think the glue was too brittle for the paper weight. What's your go-to flexible adhesive for heavier stock?
