Shoutout to the old book press at the library workshop in Springfield
I was using a cheap press from a craft store for a while, but then I tried the big cast iron one at the library. The weight and even pressure from the old press gave me a way flatter, tighter text block on my last project. Has anyone found a good modern press that works as well without costing a fortune?

Totally get that lol. I tried a friend's vintage press and it ruined me for my little hobby one. Been hunting for a decent used one online with no luck yet.

What kind of vintage press was it? My first one was a rusty hand-me-down that squealed like a stepped-on cat every time I pulled the lever. It was so bad it made my current cheap one feel like a luxury upgrade.

Honestly, how often does trying the nicer version of something just wreck your own setup? It's like @logan_gonzalez's squeaky press story but in reverse. I see it all the time with coffee makers or even tools, where you get a taste of the good stuff and then your normal thing just feels wrong. Makes the hunt for that upgrade so much more annoying when you know exactly what you're missing.
